My weekend with John Daido Loori Part 1

Since I’ve been at Naropa Boulder I have intentionally avoided taking classes that mixed artistic practice with spiritual practice because I am very protective of my art (and my spirituality).

As Donald Preziosi asked my first semester here, can there be religion without art? What would it be? That’s a heavy question when you think about it, especially when you include story telling and poetry as art .

So I’ve been careful not to take art classes with heavy religious connotations. Instead I’ve prefered to take religious classes and let my own practice infiltrate my writing.

But this past weekend I took a Zen Intensive through Naropa Boulder that was actually a zen art class. From the course description I thought I was taking a weekend […]

SWP: BA Discussion Group Leader

During the Boulder Naropa SWP this year I’m going to be one of the BA Discussion Group Leaders.

The BA Discussion Groups meet once each week on Wednesday morning. Here’s the discription for my group:

This discussion group will concern ourselves with writers from various ethnic, gender, and social backgrounds in the context provided each week of the Summer Writing Program. We will ask how the questions raised in lectures, classes, and readings find voice among writers outside the dominant social structures. We will learn about the Black Arts Movement, Nuyorican Poets, Afrilician Poets, and more. We will discuss writers ranging from Amiri Baraka to Miguel Piñero to Tim Z. Hernandez.

I’m looking forward to these discussions. As I gather more sources and ideas, I’m going to […]

Twice in one week

This is one of the nice things about being in a writing program. There are many opportunities to go to readings and even perform. Here’s the second one I’ll be going to this week: Celebration of Diversity Friday April 15th ¨7PM in PAC ¨ Naropa Campus There will be storytelling, poetry, music, art, song, dance and food! This is an event to honor and share cultural, spiritual, gender, background or lifestyle differences. If you are a Boulder student and interested in speaking or performing email tiffp83 at hotmail.com I turned in one of my papers today. I’ll have to get busy on the final draft of my thesis so I can go to these events. Carrot and the stick.

Symposion Wednesday @ Republic of Boulder

The Symposium kids are doing it for the last time ever at Republic of Boulder this Wednesday evening. Come check it out.

Bring $2.50 to get yourself a copy of Symposium Magazine from Boabob Tree Press.

It’s a happening.

Crunch Time & Sandals of the Prophet

This is the time of year when I have so much stuff to do that I’m inclined to not do anything. This is also the time when my experience as an engineering student pays off.

I have a paper on non-violent communication due in three days. The final draft (unbound) of my thesis is due in nine days. And I’d rather be reading comic books.

So I’m using the comic book reading as mini-rewards for working on my papers. Chocolate is a good motivator, too.

And a couple of friends of mine and fellow Boulder Naropa students made a video of their final project. It’s pretty cool. Check out Sandals of the Prophet.

After I […]
